An ad can say “free iPhone 17” while checkout still asks for sales tax, a connection charge, and a paid phone plan. The phone may cost $0 after monthly credits. Those credits can stop if you leave the carrier early.
There are real ways to lower the price. You can switch carriers, trade in a phone, or use credit toward a purchase from Apple. The best choice depends on your total bill, not just the price shown beside the phone.
Can you really get a free iPhone 17?
Yes, if you qualify for certain carrier promotions. T-Mobile currently advertises an iPhone 17 switch offer with no trade-in. AT&T advertises a $0 monthly phone payment with an eligible trade-in. Both offers use monthly bill credits and require a qualifying plan. Taxes and other charges may still be due.
For comparison, Apple lists the 256GB iPhone 17 at $929 when you choose “Connect on your own later.” The 512GB model is listed at $1,129 through the same option. Carrier-connected prices may differ.

Get an iPhone 17 when you switch to T-Mobile
T-Mobile’s Apple deals page says you can get the standard iPhone 17 “On Us” without a trade-in when you switch, bring an eligible number, add a line, and choose a qualifying Experience More or Experience Beyond plan.
The advertised plan starts at $85 a month with AutoPay, plus taxes and fees. T-Mobile also lists a $35 device connection charge and tax on the phone’s price due at sale. Credit approval is required.
The discount arrives as monthly bill credits. If you cancel before receiving them all, the credits can stop and you may owe the remaining phone balance. Check that your number and chosen plan qualify before you place an order.
Already with T-Mobile? Ask to see the offer for your existing line. A switch promotion and an upgrade promotion can have different rules.
Trade in a phone for an iPhone 17 at AT&T
AT&T’s iPhone 17 page currently advertises the 256GB model for as low as $0 a month with a qualifying plan and trade-in. Its displayed $0 offer requires an iPhone 14 or newer, excluding the iPhone 16e.
AT&T lists a $929.99 retail price. The discount comes through credits over 36 months, and the credits may be lower for a different trade-in or plan. Tax on the full phone price is due at sale.
Before handing over your old phone, check its accepted model, condition rules, payment status, and return deadline. Keep a copy of the offer and your trade-in receipt.
An Android phone may have trade-in value. That does not mean it qualifies for AT&T’s currently displayed $0 iPhone 17 offer. Ask for the credit on your exact model before switching.
What about Verizon and other carriers?
Verizon’s iPhone 17 page lists an installment price starting at about $25.83 a month for 36 months before an eligible promotion. Apple also displays potential Verizon trade-in savings of up to $930 on its carrier deals page. Your actual credit depends on the terms shown for your order. “Up to $930” does not mean every shopper will receive $930.
Prepaid carriers may lower a phone’s upfront price when you transfer a number and buy a plan. Before visiting a store, ask for the exact model name and the full amount due that day. An offer for an iPhone 17e is not an offer for the standard iPhone 17.
Can Apple Trade In make the iPhone 17 free?
Apple Trade In accepts eligible Apple phones and some other brands, including Samsung and Google devices. The credit depends on the model and condition. Apple can revise a mailed-in trade-in estimate after inspecting the phone. Most buyers will still owe part of the new phone’s price.
Apple also offers Apple Card Monthly Installments to eligible customers. Installments spread a balance across payments; they do not make the iPhone free.
If you have an Android phone, get an Apple trade-in estimate and a carrier trade-in quote. Compare the final costs. The highest advertised credit may require a plan that costs more each month.
Does SNAP, Medicaid, or Lifeline get you a free iPhone 17?
SNAP or Medicaid can help you qualify for Lifeline. Lifeline offers eligible households a discount of up to $9.25 a month on phone or internet service, or up to $34.25 on qualifying Tribal lands. It does not promise an iPhone 17. A participating company controls its own device offers and stock.
If you need an affordable phone now, ask a Lifeline provider which phone it can actually supply. A costly carrier plan taken only to get a “free” iPhone may cost more than a low-cost plan and a modest phone.

Calculate the cost before you apply
Suppose a qualifying new plan costs $85 a month and your current plan costs $35. That is $50 more each month, or $1,800 over 36 months, before tax and fees. In that situation, a $0 phone payment might still be the more expensive choice.
Use your own numbers:
- Write down the phone payment, sales tax, and connection fee due today.
- Add the required plan cost for the full credit period.
- Compare it with the cost of the service you would choose anyway.
- Check whether you must transfer a number, open a line, or trade in a phone.
- Ask what you would owe if you changed plans or canceled early.
Check coverage at home and work, too. Apple says U.S. iPhone 17 models use eSIM, so confirm that your chosen carrier can activate one. The standard iPhone 17 comes with 256GB or 512GB of storage. It is a different model from the iPhone 17e, iPhone Air, and Pro phones.
